Who are the Care Commission

The Care Commission help to improve care services in Scotland.  They are an Independent public organisation answerable to the Scottish Government.

What do they do

They work with care services, the Scottish Government and other public bodies to improve the quality of all care services across Scotland.

Services they regulate

The Care Commission regulate just under 15,000 care services in Scotland who care for around 320,000 people and provide jobs for around 139,000 people.

The Legal Background

The Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001 (the Act) gives us the power to regulate Scotland's care services. It set out how regulatiion should take place and defines the care services we regulate. The Care Commission assess all those who provide care service under the Act and the regulaations associated with it. The Commission also take into account the Scottish Social Setrvices (SSSC) codes of practice and Scotland's National Care Strandards.

Grading Our Service

The Care Commission now grade care services when they inspect services. Care Services are graded against up to four quality themes at each inspection.

The themes are

  • Quailty of Care and support
  • Quality of environment/information
  • Quality of staffing
  • Quality of Management and leadership

 Each theme is graded using a six point scale:

  • 6 exellent
  • 5 Very Good
  • 4 good
  • 3 adequate
  • 2 weak
  • 1 unsatisfactory
