South Ayrshire Nightstop had a “Getting to know you” three day event over last weekend to coincide with Homelessness Sunday on the 27th of January. The event was to raise awareness of the issues facing young people when threatened with homelessness in our communities and help to launch Nightstop’s new website and the service that Nightstop provides in South Ayrshire.
Nightstop provides emergency accommodation to vulnerable young people in acute housing need in South Ayrshire. The service is provided by host volunteers in their own homes for one night at a time until more appropriate accommodation can be found or the young person is able to return home.
Nightstop work very closely with the Youth Mediation team and social work, housing and health along with local community groups and other voluntary agencies. This enables Nightstop to operate and provide this much needed service.
The Ayrshire Youth Theatre supported Nightstop at their event in the Kyle Centre on Saturday and performed a short play about Homelessness. Tom Munro the project’s manager said “it was great to see the young folk of the AYT getting involved and discovering the difficult choices some young people have to face when dealing with family breakdown and issues surrounding homelessness. It was volunteering on so many levels and that is what it is all about for Nightstop. Reconnecting communities and reconnecting families with the issues that matter to them”.
Our local MSP John Scott and other local councillors gave Nightstop their support during the three day event including representatives from Labour, Elaine Little and the Scottish National Party, Nan McFarlane. All agreed Nightstop was a worth while project offering a preventative homeless service for young people.
